Better Gut Better Health: Why should you take care of your gut?

What does the gut do, and why is it important?

Your gut is important, but what exactly is it, and what does it do?

The gut or gastrointestinal tract is a tube that runs from your mouth to your anus [1]. The gut also contains your stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. It begins with the first bite of food and ends with either absorption of nutrients or elimination of undigested matter. The gut breaks down your food into nutrients your body can use.

The gut houses trillions of bacteria. These bacteria are called the gut microbiome and play an important role in your overall health [2].

The gut is also called your "second brain" because it is home to a network of nerves communicating with your brain constantly. This network of nerves helps you feel full after eating, helps you digest food, and aids in the absorption of nutrients from food. The gut also helps your immune system fight off infections by alerting your body when foreign bacteria enter from outside sources like food or water.

What causes gut health problems?

When you have poor gut health, it can cause various problems. Common symptoms include bloating, diarrhea or constipation, migraines, lack of sleep — even changes in your mood! [3]

While there may be many different causes for these conditions — including lifestyle choices, stress levels, and medications. One thing remains true: your diet plays a vital role in maintaining good health throughout all parts of your body (including your gut health).

The bacteria in your gut are responsible for breaking down food into nutrients your body can use. If the harmony of good and bad bacteria is disrupted, it can lead to health problems.

Stress can have an adverse effect on gut health if left unchecked over time. Regular exercise can reduce stress levels and help you to get better sleep. Having an active lifestyle is one of the best ways to improve overall health and well-being.

However, excessive exercise can also cause damage if done incorrectly. So be sure to listen to what your body tells you also, speak to your doctor if you are brand new to exercise. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend 150 minutes of moderate exercise for adults, including two muscle strength ingredients activities [7].
